Drive is on for next new legs for Harvey
Wednesday, 28 January 2009
THE family of a three-year-old boy who had both legs amputated after being struck down by meningitis say they need to raise more than £12,000 in a matter of weeks to keep him walking.
Harvey Parry, of Northern Avenue, Edmonton, lost both his legs after falling victim to the disease just weeks after taking his first tentative steps in March 2007.
Last year the Advertiser reported how his parents Carol and Jonathan, had raised almost £25,000 to pay for cutting-edge prosthetic limbs from America after those offered by the NHS proved too painful.
But as Harvey has grown bigger, his new limbs have become painful for him to use, leaving his parents needing to find a further £25,000 for a new set of legs.
The couple say they have only a matter of weeks to find the extra money before he outgrows his existing ones. So far the couple have raised £12,260 of the total needed.
Carol said: “We’ve been out on the streets every day trying to raise as much as we possibly can. He’s already started to complain that the legs are getting tight.
“His own legs are so swollen after being squashed into the sockets that he hasn’t been able to wear them for a couple of days.”
“It’s only thanks to people’s generosity that we have been able to give Harvey a life and we don’t want to take that quality of life away from him.
“We’re getting desperate now and I’m worried we’re not going to find the money in time. I know it’s just after Christmas and money is tight but we really need people’s help.”
